SAS Iranian embassy siege hero John McAleese died at the age of 62 – two years after his son was killed by an IED blast in Afghanistan.
John McAleese, known as Mac, was famously pictured on the balcony of the embassy in 1980 as his team dramatically ended a six-day siege by terrorist fanatics.
From Laurieston, Stirlingshire, Mac won the Military Medal in 1988 for service in Northern Ireland and notched up 17 years in the elite SAS regiment, later presenting BBC series SAS: Are You Tough Enough?
McAleese also worked as a bodyguard to three prime ministers during his distinguished career.
